You need to finish the stripping, light sand with 150 grit sand paper and use an oil stain, like Watco Danis Oil. Allow the stain to set for 30 minutes and wipe completely, a day later re-oil and wipe clean again, soak all oily rags in water after use to avoid fire hazard. Lastly finish with a good shellac or other protective coating like a wipeing varnish or possibly a spray lacquer, use at least 2 coats of any finish and possibly more with a light sand between coats.
