Greg is right about the stain conditioner, it will prevent the slotchy look when staining pine. You can use a natural Watco oil stain for an old time look, low sheen will result from a couple applications, after few days apply a satin wax. This will give you a warm natural look, and can be top coated later if you decide a film is needed. Also it is very easy for a novice to get good results with an oil stain like Watco oil.
