Yes, sanding will definately erase the patina even more...it's usually a fine line between prepping the surface for proper adhesion, and keeping what is..patination...a build up of oils, dirt, oxidation, etc...staining with a dye stain..either NGR or TransTints in alcohol will allow you to achieve the tone your after, but they may soften whats left on the table too...sounds like your color is pretty good now, so just a wash with turps and some 4"0" steel wool or Scotchbrite may be all you need..then pad on a few coats of Garnet dewaxed...rub back and wax..?
