ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

finish for pine dresser

Would appreciate suggestions on how to finish small pine dresser/commode that I intend to use for night stand. Piece has been stripped of 2 coats of paint; was told one was milk paint. Top had paint removed quite some time ago, so top does have some spots (one is oily) which I can live with if need be. Should the piece be varnished, oiled, stained--what? Is there any other preparation to be done prior? Some parts were lose and have been reglued, but basically the piece is solid. I like the look of natural wood and do not want a shiney finish but am really unsure what to do with pine. This piece, although I'm sure not expensive, has sentimental value having come from my grandmother's childhood home. If anyone has advice, please be specific--this is my first refinish attempt! (I also have a matching painted dresser!) Thanks.
