In the case of mahogany with direct sun light and a dark stain, the recreation of active gasses is very likely. The situation of this happening with shellac means that gases involving some of the stain are very probably the culpret. Stain can be made from very hot chems that will invade shellac easily when trapped and then allowed to recombine with the heating and cooling action of the sun, pumping the gases into the open pores. The ingredients in stains and finishes will continue to outgas for several months. A precat and possibly an oil stain would have been safer here, as a form of Monday morning quarterbacking. You could let it settel out and then recoat in say, five months.
