Greg thanks for your response.I'm strictly basing my presumtion of the original finish based on color & patina.I'm pretty sure it's been topcoated.I know it's hard to call without seeing but the top coats appear to be clear.Do you think it would be safe to sand out as much of the pits in gradual degrees as possible then sand & build with n.c. lacquer?I'm afraid precat may attack the existing finish & it would be difficult to match the color.By the way I tested with denatured alc.
