Both shellac and lacquer will soften and dent with moisture and wieght such as you describe. Shellac can be reamalgamated, and thereby avoid stripping, this involves a good cleaning with 0000 steel wool and paint thinner. Brush on a 1/4 lacquer thinner 3/4 denatured alcohol mix, as the finish softens brush out the blemishes till level and alow to dry for 4 hours or until sandable. Sand out the rough spots and recoat with a couple coats of new shellac. Sand between coats with 320 grit wet/dry sand paper and buff the ginal coat with 0000 steel wool and wax to a satin sheen. If the finish is degraded and very old, it may not work as well and you might need to remove and refinish the top, a top only refinish can be done succesfully. Color match is the big problem as you might imagine.
