In Response To: Advice on top coat finish for new Cherry cabinet (Michael Hartley)

You could conceivably coat with a film finish like shellac now, but I think I'd just apply successive coats of a Tung oil finish with a couple of days to dry between each coat, to build up a nice satin finish then follow with a paste wax, the more coats, the more gloss. By Pure Tung Oil, do you mean a commercial product with driers?...or just "raw" oil from the can? Most pure Tung oil needs to have mineral spirits or Turps added to it to harden properly.....if you want a "film" finish look like varnish or shellac you could use a tung oil varnish over the existing finish without a problem for a quicker "build"...there are some good wipe on ones available too that are really easy and foolproof to use.
