I have an old round tray that seems to be made of papier-mache'. It has a partial label on the back, which says "patented August 31, 1880." The lable has a Sphinx in the center, with a crane and cattails on one side and a stylized vine on the other. the top of the label is missing. The top surface of the tray is covered with a hand-painted scene. The paint might be oil or tempera. It is thick enough to show brush marks and is finely cracked over much of the surface. How should I clean and restore this piece?
