We have a 17-year old butcher block island in our kitchen that we are interested in refinishing. In addition to sanding it down to the bare wood, we want to potentially darken it to match our kitchen table. Is there a way to stain or darken the wood that would still make it safe to have food on it? After we sand it down to the bare wood, what should we apply to it to 1)achieve the color change, and 2) re-establish the finish that protects it from moisture, etc. ? HELP!
