Thanks for the replys. Exactly how would you test to determine if the piece is lacquer or another finish? I can already tell you that it is apparently not affected by alcohol. I tested a spot on the rear of the back leg with 70% Isopropyl and there was not softening or clouding at all. And James, to be fair it wasn't the furniture store that got me concerned about the Toluene. It was me when I realized what was in the wax!

I have a feeling that ultimately it will need something like the one-step cleaner wax that you describe. And it is probably going to need to eventually have the coat of nitro-cellulose because I think there are some places that have little if any finish on top of them, even though they look fine. Since I am in Florida, I am particularly concerned that the surface be cohesive enough to protect the underlying wood from swings in humidity. Is nitro-cellulose what was used as lacquer during this period? Is it difficult to work with?
