Hi Mike, chances are good that this piece is lacquered, so james suggestions for polishing out the surface are right on. I like 3M's One Step Cleaner Wax (#39006) for this type of restoration to a dulled lacquer finish. It has VERY fine buffing compounds in a easy to use squeeze bottle, and leaves a waxed but not smeary result when buffed off well by hand.If the finish does not come back up , after testing to ascertain whether it is lacquer, you could remove the wax, oils by thorough cleaning and simply recoat with some nitrocellulose...
