In Response To: Help with Finish on 1930's walnut hutch (Mike Hartley)

Finish damaging a wax is very rare, and only occurs to an isolated groop of very old shellac finishes. I have never seen it happen once in our shop but am very aware of the problem. I think they were trying to discourage you a little, but a Tolulene Free wax will avoid the problem, the claim should appear right on the label in bold letters. One can always try first, on an out of the way location, a test spot, to see what will result. As for the dullness, start with the easier product and work your way to the more severe process. Wax a small area to see what that does, then if that is not what you are after try a cream polish (sold in grocery stores) Bristol polish is one of these. If this won't do the job for you, polish the finish with a rubbing compond and parrafin oil (avaible from Van Dyke's.com) pumice powder compound mixed in with the parrafin oil should do, but you will need to polish the entire piece to avoid shiney spots. Then you will need to clean very well with a clean cotton cloth, and lastly you will need to wax for protection. Apply the wax in small patches as opposed to applying to the entire piece and then rubbing all that dry wax later, impossible! All of the methods will preserve the original finish and are only mantiance techniques, good luck, James.
