The Pottery Barn finishes tend to be a bit cheep on the ingredents. You can put a better grade over the original finish and achieve a scratch resistanse that is as much a 10 times harder. Look at the ingredents on a can of lacquer, the solids on the label and compare, one finish will be better than another. garretwade.com has a fine table top finish that is quite hard, Murdoch 'table top' finish will do a fine job and can be easily recoated again, unlike poly.
