Have you considered using the same finish that is on the table now. Could be a lacquer or it could be shellac. Shellac is a great finish, it just requires a bit more care. I recall Don Williams telling me that a good shellac finish protected with wax is more resistant than poly. My vote is that it will look better with shellac than poly any day.
