Thank you for your suggestions. The table came from the Great Great Aunt of a co-worker who remarried later in life and his wife did not like it because the chairs are uncomfortable. They have the original seats that I believe have horse hair in them but I have been cautious about taking them apart to see. The monetary value is no concern since I plan on keeping the table and using it daily. I just needed to protect it from my Grandchildren and visitors so I will more than likely use the polyurethane.
