What do I use on oak table top

What should I use to prevent damage to my antique oak table. We use it everyday and I am constantly telling everyone not to put anything on the wood. We use wooden place mats but when we have company I have a hard time telling them to put their drinks only on the coasters. The gentleman at the hardware store said to use polyurethane. The table does not need refinished it just needs a protecting coat for daily use.
