It sounds as if there is possibly water damage making the finish (if there is any left) look light in color compared to the rest of the top. Consult a local refinisher and ask if they would sell or lend an aresol can of blush eliminator. This product applied in light misted coats will often solve the type of problem you have described. It will harden up after application. If this is a situation where the finish is actually missing all the way down to bare wood, isolate the area with tape and paper, stain then apply several coats of spray lacquer, available at most paint or craft stores. Sand lightly, reomve dust and apply again until coverage more or less matches the surrounding area.
