lifting/raising dents on leather tabletop

is there a method or way of lifting or raising dents or markings on leather tabletop? i bought an old table and found that underneath the sham tabletop was actually a leathertop. the previous owner must have covered the leathertop because of deep markings made on it probably made by a child writing heavily on paper over the leather. i know that dents on wood can be lifted but i have not heard nor have any experience with leather. i do not want to ruin it by experimenting with it since the leathertop finish is generally good yet.
