In Response To: preserving original finish - how far can you go? (Michael Row)

You have arrived at the crux of the restoration debate. A very significant antique should never be over coated, in my opinion, for good reason-originality. As for most antiques, preservation is the operative word, a good cleaning and wax will be safe. For those who need to hide all the abuse and bare wood, you will have to decide along with the actual owner where to draw the line. A good restorer can make a scar appear more pleasing to the eye without damaging value or authenticity. Colored wax, steel wool, polishing compounds, and sometimes tinted shellac touch-up, will be a safe choice for preservation. Always ask yourself, will this invade the original finish, irreversably? Is this a really important antique, or just somthing I want to look nice and still serve it's intended purpose?
We will, likely, not out last our fine posetions, but others will judge us by what we did to the item in our time.
