My Mom and I had an error in judgment years ago and cut down the legs on my Grandmother's headboard. I did not have side rails and was living in a cottage with a low ceiling. I have found side rails at a yard sale that fit and wish to restore the bed in it's entirety(it's a painted piece). However now the slots for the rails are not only different heights, the slots on the headboard are less than an inch above the floor. I want the headboard it's original height(about 10 inches taller than it is now). How can I extend the legs and have the bed be stable and also attach the rails. If I use a dowel to join the extension will it block the slots on the bed for the rails? I've seen in Van Dyke's other methods of attching rails, but then how do I remove the metal "prongs" that go into the slots. I hope I've given a clear picture and you wonderful people can help me. Thank you, Nancy
