You can use a resin to fill the damaged grain and bind the remaining wood together. Place the sheet on a flat surface with waxed paper to prevent sticking to table, etc. Pour the wood restorer into the cracks and place more waxed paper on top, cement blocks on top of that. Clamp a board on each side of the back and squeeze the whole thing back together with a couple long thin wedges to close the splits, allow to dry. Remove wieght, sand off excess resin and nail back into place. This should be as strong as is needed.
