What is the result of the incompatibility? It may be if the finish has wrinkled that sanding or stripping is all you can do, once a coat has dried, that's it. Once the poly has cured for a couple weeks it will not attache well, so you must not delay if you wish to continue with that coating. I suggest you try shellac in the future.
