ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I am presently stripping a cabinet. The top section including frame and
doors are all wood. Unfortunately I got to the sideboard section and the
doors were also wood,except for the carving which was something other, it
is green and very soft, when I add alcohol it melts somewhat. I saw this on
Indonisian pieces I had stripped last month. I was able to apply a alcohol
based stain without sanding,once it's dried. What is this material?.
