You can tell what is in the finish with assorted solvents. The hotter the solvent required to disolve a finish the more likely it is a poly, etc. Begin with a small artists brush and some alcohol. Find a hidden spot and soak the brush in the alcohol, now begin to work the wet brush in a small circle on the hidden area. After a minute shellac will soften and start to slide around, if there is no such response try lacquer thinner. Lacquer thinner will soften lacquer in a couple minutes, unless it is a pre cat lacquer, these finishes are only about 25 years old and they will require acetone to soften them. As for poly type finishes, they respond only to methlyne chloride paint stripper, and even then they only break up, and won't liquify like other finishes will. Also shellac will appear orange-ish colored in black light.
