humpback chest & Singer sewing machine cabinet

I have acquired 2 of my grandmother's antique pieces - treadle Singer sewing machine in cabinet and a trunk with a humped lid. They are both in sorry shape. The sewing cabinet veneer is peeling off the hinged top in chunks while much of it is still tightly attached. It has turned a very dark color from having been in a basement for 40 years. What can I do to remove and replace the veneer?

The large trunk originated in Poland and is made of wood and was covered by leather with wood slats to hold it in place. The leather is very brittle from age and having been in a cellar. I know what to do about the damp musty smell, but I don't know what to do about the exterior restoration. It is very unique in shape and size and has a lot of history to it. The latches and hinges are discolored but not rusted. Do I remove the brackets which hold the slats over the leather? Where do I get new brackets and hardware. Help!!
