Heat Ring on Lacquered Oak Table

I am looking for some expert advice on the best methods of repairing an oak table finished in lacquer that has a heat ring on the surface. What are the possible alternatives to stripping the table top? I have heard of all kinds of concoctions such as vaseline, toothpaste, cigarette ash, mayonnaise, methyl hydrate but I'm not sure what specific application is best for a lacquer finish. Your wisdom is most appreciated.

Thanks

Neal
