Donna, sounds like mid 20th century "Water Fall" furniture. It was cheap and abundant and as far as refinished will probably not be worth much even if redone. The furniture had wood veneers that you probably can find at a local DIY store like Lowes or Home Depot. Having been through what you are doing before, I elected to even up the missing veneer areas with light weight spackel and then wall papered it. It looks great.
