In Response To: Matching a Cushman Finish (Dennis)

while I'm not familiar with the Cushman line, all pigment based stains ...especially heavy bodied ones like a gel stain...will always make the grain show up distinctly. A dye stain...water or alcohol/methanol based will cause the grain to show the least, especially if you aproach the final shade gradually with dilute stain coats. This sounds like a finish that uses a dye based wash, and then colored (or toner) lacquer coats to effect a finish where the color really sits in the finish more than in the wood....Heywood Wakefield is another similar look I believe...that light champagne toned finish.
