hello, I just bought an antique trunk. it has rust on the hinges and lock. I used a toothbrush to wash it and noticed that there is a gold color underneath but has a heavy layer of black and rust. the metal is thin in some areas. is there a way that i could clean the rust off and bring back some of the shine? and lossen up the hinges? I don't want to damage it and i also don't want it to rust through. the body of the trunk is canvas with black on it.the black is peeling and cracking so i'm not sure if this is paint. can I put something on it so that it will not continue to peel? i also want to condition the wood. I'm not sure the age of this trunk. it still has the trays to hold the clothes and a place for a top hat.I have never tried to restore an antique so please help with any advice. thank you, Melissa
