In Response To: antique white sewing machine and cabinet (Dana)

I collect antique and vintage sewing machines - The very best thing to use to remove old gunky oil from the machine itself is liquid wrench. The original manuals say to clean with kerosene. Liquid wrench is almost all kerosene. Spray on the areas to be cleaned - let sit a few minutes and wipe off. It is amazing what this will do. The most important thing is that it won't damage the gold/colored decals on the machine. Everything else will either remove them, cause them to flake or "silver them" remove all of the color. Including just rubbing. The website www.treadleon.net has really good information and complete instructions on how to restore (without refininshing) treadle machine cabinets and the machines themselves = including the electroplating. They have a whole section of White too. I restored a white treadle this past winter and totally enjoyed the process and am amazed at the results. These machines are wonderful and deserve to be restored.
