antique white sewing machine and cabinet

So the other day my mother happened to find an antique sewing cabinet w/ machine outside in someone's garbage. So the people let us take it and here now I have this very pretty cabinet! It's still a foot petal with i guess cast iron legs that says white. It still has it's decorated front piece, and most of the decorative trim is there (one piece is chipped). There are several scratches and chips in the wood (along edges), and I am not exactly sure how to go about fixing this. I don't think I can fix the chips, but I would love to be able to take out some scratches and restore the finish without refinishing it. I also don't want to destoy the value of something like this. I guess my question is what is the best way to do this.

Also does anyone know any techniques of taking off some of the excess oil? It seems to be covering some of the emblems on the machine.

I think what also made me excited was that all the feet were still in a tin box in one of the drawers. They were patented in July of 1891. I want to go look up the Patent # of the machine itself next. The skeleton key for the locks was still in the drawers as well. I think I am just so excited because it was there for the taking in someone's trash and it is so beautiful! I had to ask the people why there were throwing it out.... they were moving... shame really!
