The cracks sound like there is a seperation in the frame, look inside to see if the members are popping apart in there. Add fresh hide glue, knock it back together and use a rope and pad the corners, then twist the rope tight with a short stick to draw it together while the glue dries. A tooth brush is just the thing, use some naptha and paper towels to clean and remove old wax. Get a paste wax that contains no toluene, and once all is clean, rewax the finish. That maybe all that you need to do.
