In Response To: cracked drawer side (robert stewart)

This is a judgement call, as it's inside of the piece, and may not get any worse. Obviously the side has shrunk and the split is the result. If this is an old piece, I would take a dead blow mallet and sharply knock the inside to see if the dovetail pops loose. If it does, you can re-cut the dovetail pin to allow the crack to close and reassemble and reglue the drawer pretty easily. Some shrinkage cracks don't close however, and then some type of filling would be necessary, but in an antique that would not be a good practice unless the drawer side becomes compromised, meaning that it is absolutely necessary. I would always take another route than epoxies with an Antique, if thats what this piece is.-Regards
