I'm not sure about using the super delicate methods listed already. I have a small antique shop and the thing I swear by is cutting compound (yes the same stuff used to rejuvenate dull paintwork on your car). The combination of fine grit and carnuba wax is pretty much a one application fix. If the surface is dull (like some oak pieces) I just use toothpaste. Puritans may scoff - but it works for me - and I get stunning results.
