I'm afraid you've done some damage to the finish already...I think I'd be tempted to re wet just the remaining paper towel with the same nail polish remover, using a fine artists brush, just transfer the liquid to the paper towel remnants and let them soak up just enough to re- wet, then test for loosening, and carefully remove the towel fragments with an X-acto knife tip or sharp chisel edge,and let the surface dry.then you'll have to see how bad the "burn" is to decide what's next....
