In Response To: Re: penwork box (Michael L. Norton)

Thanks for the quick response.I'm a restorer-conservator (not refinisher!)for over 15 years in business.I'm completely aware of the restoration method and the value of this box as well. Some veneers are missing and need some repair on the marquetry too.The previous owner of the box removed the original finish because he wanted to refinish (!)the whole thing .Thank God he didnt ruin the picture and the penwork , not to say the patina on it.He said he used ethyl alcohol. So I just stepped in time and I've bought the box from him.I've got contact with an expert (30+yrs)conservator-historian from England. He says that in the early regency period they've not used shellac finish on boxes and teacaddies until the 1820's.As he suggested they used spirit varnishes like the white varnish which is a mixture of certain amount of resins (sandarac, mastic, balsam, allemy, copal)and alcohol.I wish I could know the exact recipe.Anyone?Personally I'm not using shellac finish on pre 1800 furniture either.Just oil and wax.I just wanted to ask around folks for second opinion or other suggestions. Thanks for it I appreciated.
