And, do you have an appraisal on it's value? These are things to consider before you start. Fact, shellac has been used as early as the 1600s, as or in, varnish. Damar was typically used by painters. I have restored Regency Tea Caddies, boxes and lots of Regency furniture, most of them had a shellac finish. I would suggest having it looked at by a conservator to determine whether or not you should do anything to it. Or take the safe route and use a microcrystalline wax to preserve it until you can find out more about it. If you did decide to polish it, I would suggest a blonde shellac.(no color change) Good luck.
