Other than alcohol for shellac there isn't any such a thing. You are right, if you want to bake a cake you have to break a few eggs. The so-called environmentally safe strippers just seem good in concept only. You will exert 5 fimes the effort in useing them and the results will be not as good. Also you will comsume more of your hard earned cash. There is no easy answer here or we would all be using the nicey nicey stuff and spareing our noses and the ground water. Take some comfort in knowing that you have saved some part of a tree, and choose as many energy saving products as you can. We use less power for sanding by bleaching with oxalic acid. You can avoid tossing the old stripper in the trash, mix it with saw dust to deliquify it when done. Put this in an an old can and seal it tightly, when your town has an old chemical discard day, take the can there for proper disposal.
