I bought a large old wooden bowl from e-bay. The interior smells awful (like some old musty/rancid oil I suppose) and even though we have cleaned it several times it still contaminates food with an acrid taste. Today I have washed it with a mild dishwashing soap and also treated it with baking soda. This has removed a good portion of the smell, but some remains. I am not too happy with it yet as it still retains some of the smell and I suppose the taste will still be there. Should I let this thing dry out really well and put some finish like polyurethane on the interior to place a barrier between it and my food? I have read the postings about Oxalic acid and chlorine bleach but am not sure about using those things. Looking for some solid recommendations / instructions here....thanks.
