In Response To: Removing antique glue (Peter Yorston)

The best glue would be the same hide glue that was there befor, just glue it back together with more hide glue. The liquid hide glue that is in most hardware stores will reactivate the old glue. chip out what is loose and add some more then clamp tight for at least eight hours, 24 hours befor reuse. The dry wood can be oiled with a couple coats of Watco oil stainof the right color, wipe all excess oil off after 20 or 30 minutes. dispose of oily rags in water to avoid combustion.
