ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I just bought an old high dome trunk from a sale. The entire exterior is painted black except for some strips of wood and the bottom. Others have told me that most of the covering is tin. I've looked through the message board for ways to remove the paint from it. It sounds like the most popular solution is to use a brass brush or light sandpaper. I believe the tin has a undesirable painted pattern to it by looking at the top edge when the trunk lid is open. Is it possible to remove the paint and pattern to the tin and then shine it? I've never restored anything before and removing the tin seems like a great undertaking.
Please give me any suggestions you might have! I can provide pictures to anyone that wants them. Thanks for any and all info.
