There are MANY books on the subject, most local libraries have very many....and all rules are not set in stone, as much of the furniture in this country was manufactured by European craftsmen, or by artisans trained by them.Wood type, style and construction methods, as well as fasteners and joining will all be used to determine origin, but you'd be surprised at the different things supposedly trained people will tell you about the same piece of furniture. Most dealers I know are constantly collecting books on the subject and maintain a library for reference, and the internet as well as confering with other dealers they trust.
