I recently purchased an iron and brass bed from the 1870's. I like the dark patina on the brass. My problem is the finish is shiny in some areas. It looks as if someone used a spray "brass" because I can see the shiny parts have a misted area around the edges. There are also scratches into the shiny parts revealing the dark patina underneath. Should I use nail polish remover to take off the shine? I want the brass to look more even & dark. The magnet test showed the cross supports (two on headboard and two on foot) are plated. The rest of the details are brass. Can anyone advise me on how to proceed?
