This is a Carpathian Elm Burl, rosewood is rarely found in pieces wider than 3 or 4 inches, the flitches of veneer that made these items are about 14 inches wide. Yes these are Art Deco, a kind of Bogart, heavy on the GUY kind of thing. Very cool, I think that the one with the marble shelf is for a bar, while the other would have been for reading material or smoking material, guy stuff. I have several large pieces of this veneer in my shop that are just like them. This is a 12 on the 1 - 10 beauty rating for veneer. I think the finish will proove to be lacquer, but even if it is shellac, the restoration can be the same. Glue down any loose veneer with a hide or liquid hide glue. Clean with lemon oil and polish with a cream polish, avaible in almost any grocery store, known as bristol polish, there are quite a few. After polishing once a week for a month, apply a good satin wax and buff to a satin luster.
