If the split is clean and goes back together tight, then you can use a slow epoxy, or leave out some of the hardner in the regular five minute epoxy, to slow it down so you will have more time to work, then clamp the split back together with hose clamps and some padding to avoid marking the wood. A little wax around the outer face will keep the glue from sticking to the outer surfaces. But if the splits have missing wood then I suggest that you clean out the splits with a pick and sand paper till you have a good smooth surface to insert some thin wood slivers to make up the missing wood, then epoxy and clamp the split. When dry, over night, shave off the wood that protrudes with a sharp knife and sand smooth. This will be much stronger than regular glue and the dowels will only weaken the remaing wood, after that you can drill out the holes for the casters again.
