ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I have a family antique victorian day bed. I am stripping it to refinish and the leggs at the head have split completely. There were casters on solid metal pins at the bottom, and dowels from the top to hold the thing together. The split runs evenly from top to bottom which is solid wood about 12".
The legs are beautifully carved and designed and the tops are square with carved designs on the two exposed sides. I think replicating the legs will be impossible for me and too expensive for me to hire someone else to do.
I can't imagine how I could possibly put a couple of dowels into each leg and have them be drilled straight and aligned. So I'm leaning towards headless screws from the outside. Any other suggestions on how best to fix them?
