With embossed tin you want to paint the back ground color first, then using a dry brush technique, lightly apply paint to the raised surfaces. In the case I mentioned, the red was on the raised area. I usually finish the wood first, stain with a fruitwood or dark cherry stain. Watco oil stain is good for this, I would start with Fruitwood, then follow up with a Dark Walnut stain, allow to dry between applications of stain. Then tape off the metal and seal with a 2 Lb. cut of shellac and spray on a top coat of satin, Deft lacquer.
