It sounds like you have a set of mixed seat designs, possibly, if they look the same otherwise, they were combined from various groups to make a closing set from a line with variations on the seat. I have seen the same chairs, in a set, with hole to hole and a the press in style for cane but no cane was ever used. The chairs were, instead, covered with a leather embossed seat. This could be what you have, an embossed style seat can be purchased from Van Dyke's.com these are made from a strong leather/paper composition. You cut the edge to fit over the hole and put a round head upholstery nail every 1 1/4" all the way around the edge to keep it in place. Use a compass or deviders to map out the spacing, mark and pierce with an awl for each nail. Make the shape of the seat so that it mimicks the outside shape of the seat frame but covers at least 3/4" of the wood. The fiber seats can be stained and finished just like wood, some buffing with fine steel wool after the stain is applied will give you a high light in the color to make for an old look.
