Typically these were only finished with wax when relegated to an "objet D'art".....you say it needs to be refinished...are you sure? Of course it depends on the final result you desire, but usually a good cleaning and fresh coat or two of butchers wax on the base will keep it looking antique....and you can re-apply the wax once or twice a year to "freshen" it..for the top, you could choose an oil finish designed for butcher blocks...like "Preserve" or Behlen's salad bowl finish. WoodWorkers Supply has several products on page 144 and 145 of their latest catalog...or go online- www.woodworker.com, or Butchers wax as well if your not putting food on it..if there is a finish on the base that's chipping and/or flaking, then you'll probably need to refinish it. Shellac followed by a rubdown and wax is a good choice....and easy to accomplish...
